Earth Day, Florals, and Butterflies: April at the ROM

In accordance with the Ontario Chief Medical Officer of Health, the ROM is temporarily closed to the public, effective November 23.

The health and safety of our staff, volunteers and visitors remains our top priority. We will continue to follow the recommendations of our public health officials and look forward to opening our doors again once it is safe and responsible to do so.
Live event
Wednesday, April 21; 4:00 - 5:00pm EDT
Free on Zoom. RSVP Required.

Join ROM's Deborah Metsger and Mark Peck as they discuss the global importance of Earth Day initiatives, and explore opportunities for each of us to get involved in our local communities.

Earth Day is more than a celebration of our planet and its ecosystems - it's a time to act and make the world a better place. The Royal Ontario Museum is committed to being part of the solution, whether it's through our timely exhibitions, such as Wildlife Photographer of the Year, Elias Sime: Tightrope, and Great Whales: Up Close and Personal, or the upcoming appointment of our new Allan and Helaine Schiff Curatorship of Climate Change.

This year, on April 22, we're giving our time to go into our own neighbourhoods to help clean up our outdoor spaces in a safe and socially distanced way. And we invite all of you to safely do the same in your own neighbourhood. Grab your mask, gloves, a salad tong, and some garbage bags and help make a difference. After all, we all love dinosaurs, but we don't want to turn into one!
Call for submissions

Calling all kids and teens.

Help the ROM create a portrait of life during the pandemic that reflects your unique experiences. Share your stories and perspectives through original, creative works of art and capture history while it's being made.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and it's had a profound effect on how you - kids and teens - learn, play, create, communicate, and so much more. You can help make sense of this moment and shape how it goes down in history - and how it will come to life in a new exhibition.

Submit your original artwork for a chance to be displayed in a new, crowd-sourced, ROM original exhibition this coming fall.
ROM at Home opens the doors to the Museum with programming - live discussions, topical Q&As, descriptive audio experiences, and behind-the-scenes videos from ROM curators and experts - all accessible through our website and social media channels.

This month, we take a closer look at fashion and design, from the avant-garde to the timelessly elegant. Watershed moments in history can be marked by distinct shifts in clothing, architecture, furniture, and decorative arts, as style takes the form of personal and public expression. Explore the dynamic interplay between fashion, culture, and nature through the works of pioneering designers and the influence of the natural world on the creative process.
Experts & Objects

Deborah Metsger, Assistant Curator of Botany, discusses the exhibition Florals: Desire and Design, exploring a time when Europe became obsessed with flowers in their design. Metsger walks us through a period of European botanical discovery and the impact of those discoveries in the fashions of that era.
ROM magazine

Interweaving design, art, and technology, the extraordinary designs of Dutch couturier, Iris van Herpen, push the boundaries of traditional fashion and craftsmanship. Van Herpen's garments bring viewers inside the friction-filled world of technology and nature that she herself inhabits. Her creations reveal what can be accomplished when you push the limits of haute couture, and her ground-breaking approach has attracted everyone from museum curators and ballet troupes to major celebrities like Bjork, Lady Gaga, and Beyonce.
ROMKids Show

This time on the ROMKids Show we learn about all the ways the world transforms around us. We'll look at how planets formed billions of years ago, how volcanic eruptions make new islands, and the curious journey of how caterpillars turn into beautiful butterflies. Then we'll make our own paper towel art butterfly!
