Go behind the scenes at the ROM

August 22, 2018
Research, new acquisitions, discoveries, fundraising - the ROM does a lot behind the scenes and we want to share that news with you. Find out what's been happening at your Museum.
NEW ACQUISITIONS
Artwork by Anish Kapoor

Be sure to head to the Sir Christopher Ondaatje South Asian Gallery on your next visit to see the recently acquired Fold II, a sculptural print by renowned British artist Anish Kapoor. With the ROM's mandate to collect, study and exhibit art, culture, and nature, this piece is an important addition to the Museum's contemporary art and South Asian collections, reflecting all the makings of Kapoor’s work—bold colour and abstract organic form.

The acquisition was made possible by the generous support of the Louise Hawley Stone Charitable Trust, Peer Review Fund, and is part of the ROM’s newly established Dan Mishra South Asia Initiative.

The Healing Power of Dinosaurs: A look at Dinosaur Day at The Hospital for Sick Children

On June 8th volunteers from the Museum's Outreach Program presented “Dinosaur Day” at The Hospital for Sick Children. With a special visit from Dr. David Evans, Temerty Chair and Senior Curator of Vertebrate Palaeontology at the ROM, children were able to touch real fossils, learn how to dig up a dinosaur, and get crafty.

Unboxing Medusaceratops

Watch ROM staff unbox fossils of the Medusaceratops, one of the world's oldest known horned dinosaurs that roamed the Earth 75 million years ago. They are part of a donation the Museum received of over 750 fossils from a single bone bed of this amazing dinosaur.
You Asked, We Answered

August 9 was International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples and the ROM celebrated by hosting an Ask Me Anything on Instagram with our Indigenous Outreach and Learning Coordinator, J'net Ayayqwayaksheelth (One who gives away and still stands tall).
Real Fake: The Story of a Zapotec Urn

What makes an object real or fake in a museum?

ROM researchers and their colleagues take you behind the scenes to explore that question as they study the history of a Zapotec urn, hidden for decades in the ROM’s vaults.
ROM Celebrates #InternationalCatDay

Long before dogs were known as ‘man’s best friend’, cats were the most favoured pet by the ancient Egyptians. This particular specimen is a 2500 year-old mummified cat wrapped in linen bandages.
THE BEES ARE BACK IN TOWN
Visit the ROM's bee hive on level 2 in the Patrick and Barbara Keenan Family Gallery of Hands-on Biodiversity and see if you can spot the queen bee.

With only one queen per hive, she's followed around by a 'posse' of worker bees who make sure she is fed and performing her royal duty – laying eggs. If she stops laying eggs, the worker bees will kill her... so no pressure!
