Aftershocks: Japanese Earthquake Prints

Online Experience

When disaster strikes, humour heals.

In ROM's latest online exhibition, Aftershocks: Japanese Earthquake Prints, we take a closer look at how satirical prints helped the inhabitants of Edo (present day Tokyo) cope in the aftermath of the 1855 Ansei Great Earthquake. Widely distributed prints – namazu-e (catfish) prints – used bold artistry, folklore, and satire to help make sense of the disaster and promote healing. Over 45 colourful woodblock prints from ROM's exceptional collections are presented in a unique online exhibition that invites viewers to explore, making their own connections with today's social media and the resilience of the human and creative spirit.

This online exhibition is co-presented by ROM and The Japan Foundation, Toronto.
